PM10: The coarse particles are between 2.5 and 10 micrometers (from about 25 to 100 times thinner than a human hair). These particles are called PM10 (we say "P M ten", which stands for Particulate Matter up to 10 micrometers in size). These particles cause less severe health effects mostly in the upper respiratory tract. PM 10: “Inhalable coarse particles” are between 2.5 and 10 micrometers in diameter PM 2.5 : “Fine particles” are smaller than 2.5 micrometers in diameter For a size comparison, a single strand of human hair on average is 70 micrometers in diameter, making it 30 times larger than the largest fine particle.

Particle emissions of road traffic are generally associated with exhaust emissions. Until recently particle emissions due to abrasion processes were neglected. However, the research project ASTRA2000/415 showed clearly the important contribution of these emissions to the PM10 load of the ambient air. concentration of particles with a diameter of less than 10 µm (PM10) and of particles with a diameter of less than 2.5 µm (PM2.5). PM2.5, often called fine PM, also comprises ultrafine particles having a diameter of less than 0.1 µm. In most locations in Europe, PM 2.5 constitutes 50–70% of PM10.

Measures to reduce emissions are of two kinds: reduce the formation of wear particles and reduce the whirling of the particles. Represents the average amount of time that particles sized in the stated bin took to cross the OPS's laser beam.

By way of comparison, a human hair is about 100 micrometres, so roughly 40 fine particles could be placed on its width. PM 10 and PM 2.5 are not used for any application. When someone talks about PM 10 they are referring to particles smaller than 10 µm. These particles include dust, pollen and mold spores. Conversely, when someone references PM 2.5 they are referring to particles smaller than 2.5 µm. These smaller particles include combustion particles, organic compounds and metals. The abbreviation PM stands for particulate matter, and the number to the right indicates the particle size.
